On behalf of the International Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy (ICNIRS), I would like to express our delight and congratulations on the formation of your new NIR Council in China. We are already very much aware of the strong activity in the science and practical use of NIR in Asia in general, and China in particular. I personally have been privileged to participate in NIR conferences in Korea (ICNIRS 2001), Thailand (2004) and Japan (2008). In all cases, I was very impressed with the amount of excellent NIR work being reported, including a significant amount from China. The number of young scientists in attendance and the enthusiasm shown by all who attended was most pleasing.

It has been clear for several years that a strong relationship already exists between NIR scientists in China and many other countries, with many visits on both sides. As recently as last month, ICNIRS Chairman-Elect Pierre Dardenne participated in a workshop in China, and he stated in the latest issue of NIR News that “China will very soon make an important impact on the global NIR community”.

I am certain that your decision to form the China Council of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (CCNIRS) will greatly assist your efforts to further strengthen the already good relationship with ICNIRS and to organise more people to participate in international NIR activities. This has been proved already in many countries, including Australia, with similarly strong NIR societies.

The next important international NIR event will be the ICNIRS conference, NIR-2009, in Bangkok this November. I look forward to meeting you in person, and also welcoming a strong contingent from China!
